Basex recommends caution on adopting 2007 Microsoft Office

Upgrading too quickly to the 2007 Microsoft Office system could adversely impact productivity, warns knowledge economy research firm Basex. The industry analysts believe that there are good reasons not to rush into an upgrade. Depending on the organization, the minuses of upgrading to 2007 Microsoft Office may outweigh the pluses, according to Basex analysis.

"Microsoft has released dozens of new and redesigned applications and servers as part of its new 2007 Office system," said Jonathan Spira, CEO and chief analyst, Basex. "Our research tells managers what's really new and which of these tools is right for their organizations so that they can plan appropriately."

Basex says the 2007 Microsoft Office system is so different that it should be considered a new product, not merely an upgrade -- especially given extensive training requirements for the new user interface.

In addition, not all components have to be deployed. However, most organizations will probably need to deploy more than just one or two.

XML knowledge is another consideration: with this system, documents are XML-based.
